Northern California Rover Club - Club Calendar
Fall Colors - October 25-26th, Downieville, CA
Join us for the annual NCRC Fall Colors trip. This year we venture back to the beautiful family-style trails of the Downieville and Sierra Buttes region.
This expedition-style 4x4 tour will explore the higher elevations of the Sierra gold country.
Intermediate off-roading suitable for all vehicles, but sections of the trail are extremely exposed, where driver attention is critical. Body damage unlikely; brush striping possible. Stout recovery points front and rear required. Self-sufficiency in spare parts, tools and provisions suggested. Be prepared for cold temperatures in camp. Heavy weather (early snow) may require a change in route due to high elevation.
We'll be meeting at 9:00 AM, Saturday, October 25th in "downtown" Downieville, in the parking lot adjacent to the sole gas station. Here we'll do all tech inspection and sign all waivers. Approximate meeting location GPS coordinates: N39°33'27" W120°49'44".
We'll be departing at 9:30 AM promtly so please be fueled and provisioned in advance of this time. We will form a convoy east of town on Hwy 49 just past the Downey River single-lane bridge.
We will use CB Channel 7, HAM 146.500, and FRS Channel 7, privacy code 7 for all trip communication.
Please contact the trip organizer if you are interested in attending this event!
UPDATED TRIP INFORMATION
Downieville is about 180 miles from the Bay Area and it will take about 3.5 to 4 hours to get the to meeting location depending on how fast you drive, the truck you're driving, traffic, the time you leave, etc.
Plan for cold weather at night!!
Here are driving directions to Downieville from the Bay Area
We were not able to run a proper recce for this trip before hand so we are not entirely sure of the exact route we will be taking at this time. We don't know 100% for sure where we are camping, and we don't know the exact types of trails that we'll be driving. At this time we are considering running a 41 mile route known as Poker Flat that passes through about a half dozen ghost towns and mining camps and is known to be very scenic. We should be able to do half or more of the trail on Saturday and the remainder on Sunday before heading home. Please always keep in mind that no matter how much we plan and prepare a trip there is always the chance we may encounter difficult trail sections, sections that take a long time to get through, and that damage to your vehicle is always a possibility (though not likely if you drive safely, ask for help when you need it, and follow the rules we establish before hitting the trail).
We're heading out for Downieville very early in the morning on Saturday.
