Niagara Rim - Sept 13-14th, Stanislaus National Forest, CA

The Niagara Rim Trail is a fun and scenic loop trail in the California's beautiful Sierra Nevada. Since the trail is a loop, the trip has a "Base Camp" style, and affords trailers, motorhomes, and other more "homey" camping arrangements not available on the trips where we camp in a different spot each night. We break the trail up into two parts. The first part is done on Saturday, and involves minimal (but still possible) risk of vehicle damage. A driver of very limited experience can have a fun time on the trail if willing to listen to the directions of a good spotter (there will be several on the trip). If possible we'll pair less-experienced drivers with drivers from whom they can learn. Barring mechanical incidents, leaving the camp site at 10:00 AM will result in a return well before sundown and the ability to cook a fine dinner.

Sunday, those who wish will run the first section of the trail, which is more challenging, and presents a significantly higher risk of vehicle damage (especially the taller vehicles w/o external roll cages). Those who would rather bug off can leave early, or find a seat in a vehicle that is running the trail (this is a good way to experience harder trails without risking your personal vehicle).

Directions to the camp site at the Niagara Rim OHV Area:

  • CA-108 to Strawberry ( 43 miles east of Sonora)
  • Look for forest road 5N01 (may also be signed Eagle Meadow Road ) just past mile marker 42
  • Turn right and go about 300 yards to the intersection with Forest Road 6N24
  • To reach the Niagara OHV Campground area
  • Turn right at the 5N01/6N24 intersection
  • Stay on Forest Road 5N01 and go about two miles to the intersection of Forest Road 5N09

We will begin safety inspections in the campground at 8:30 AM on Saturday. We'l have a drivers meeting at 9:45, and head out on the trail at 10:00 AM.

We will be using CB Channel 7, HAM 146.500, and FRS Channel 7, privacy code 7 for communication.
